The Honourable Mr. Justice Smith, JA
The Honourable Mr. Justice Smith, born in 1959, attended St. Mary's College on Port of Spain, from which he graduated in 1977. He proceeded to the Cave Hill (Barbados) Campus of the University of the West Indies, whence he graduated with the Bachelor of Laws degree in 1980. After a brief stint as Audit Examiner at the Auditor General's Department in 1980-81, Mr. Smith undertook further studies in law at the Inns of Court School of Law, London. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in July 1983, and the Bar of Trinidad & Tobago in March 1984. During the 1983-84 period, Mr. Smith undertook a period of pupilage in the Middle Temple chambers of Mr. John Perry QC. Between 1984 and 1987, Mr. Smith was involved in private practise in general litigation in Trinidad & Tobago. From 1987, he focused more specifically on civil litigation and general advisory practise. Mr. Smith was appointed temporary High Court judge from April to July 1997, and subsequently permanently appointed to the High Court bench on 1st August, 1997.
From September 1991 to April 1997, Mr. Justice Smith was a Member of the Board of the Legal Aid and Advisory Authority. He was Junior Member of the Council of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago for the 1993-1994 year, becoming Senior Member for the 1995-1996. His association with the Sir Hugh Wooding Law School involves his membership of the Panel of Judges for Moot Courts during 1996-97 and since 1999, as Associate Tutor in Civil Procedure 1.
After nine years of service on the High Court Bench, Mr. Justice Smith was appointed Justice of Appeal on October 1st, 2008.
Mr. Justice Smith is holder of the Duke of Edinburgh Award (bronze, silver and gold) and is an avid fan of basketball, football, cricket and karate.
He is a Roman Catholic and is married with 3 children.
