The Honourable Mr. Justice Mohammed, JA
The Honourable Mr. Justice Mohammed obtained his primary education at the University School. He attended Hillview College from 1974 to 1981, when he was awarded an Open Scholarship in Modern Studies.
He graduated from the University of the West Indies with the Bachelor of Laws degree in 1984 and took the Legal Education Certificate from the Sir Hugh Wooding Law School in 1986. He was admitted to practise at the Bar of Trinidad & Tobago in the same year.
Mr Mohammed began his Legal Career in 1987 as State Counsel in the Solicitor-General’s Department. On his own application, he was transferred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in August 1987. As State Counsel he prosecuted extensively before the Magistrates’ Courts, particularly in preliminary enquiries into charges of murder. Between 1993 and 1997, as State Counsel III and Assistant DPP, Mr. Mohammed prosecuted in the Port of Spain criminal Assizes and in appeals before the Court of Appeal. He was appointed DPP on 31st July, 1998, the youngest in the Commonwealth of Nations.
Between 1989 and 1998, Mr. Mohammed participated in several law-enforcement seminars, in Trinidad & Tobago and abroad; on forensic investigation, prosecution of money-laundering offences, drug-trafficking investigations and extradition.
As DPP, Mr. Mohammed managed to clear a substantial backlog of indictments, reducing from 2 to 3 years to 2 to 3 months the average time from the receipt of depositions from the Magistrates’ Courts to the filing of indictments. He also implemented a case management system and conducted regular Assize and Magistrates’ Court workshops to sensitise prosecuting attorneys to various legal issues. Mr. Mohammed served as DPP until his appointment as Judge of the High Court on 1st July, 2002.
As a High Court Judge, Justice Mohammed has heard several high profile criminal matters and has served on key internal committees looking at the Administration of Justice and Criminal Case Management. After serving 11 years on the Bench of the High Court, Justice Mohammed was appointed to the Court of Appeal on November 12th, 2013.
Mr. Justice Mohammed is married with children.
