MEDIA RELEASE - Judiciary Corrects Inaccurate Statements in Article of the Sunday Newsday
- 29 May 2023
The Judiciary has taken note of an article published on page 3 of the Sunday Newsday of 28th May 2023 entitled “6 cops to boycott murder trial” and wishes to correct inaccuracies contained in it.
The case involving six (6) police officers charged in the deaths of three (3) persons was assigned to the docket of High Court Judge, Justice Carla Brown-Antoine, in January of 2019. Since that time the matter has been the subject of case management by the Judge and Master, with the participation of both the Prosecution and the Defence, in preparation for trial.
As is the usual practice, the trial date is set with the concurrence of both sides. In this case, the trial date was fixed at a hearing on Monday 27th February, 2023 with the agreement of both the Prosecution and the Defence. It is therefore inaccurate to state, as the article does, that “At the latest hearing on Wednesday, the judge set June 1 as the trial date.” It is also inaccurate to state that the Judiciary insists on the trial taking place by way of a “hybrid hearing”. The accused are expected to appear in court in this matter. No direction has been given for a hybrid hearing in this case.
