Justice of the Appeal Court of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr Justice Wendell Kangaloo, was flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, early this morning (May 25, 2012) for further specialist care following severe injuries he sustained in a vehicular accident last Sunday (May 20, 2012).
The special Lear Jet air ambulance taking Mr Justice Kangaloo to the United States left Piarco International Airport at 5.52 a.m. with a five-man crew, including three doctors aboard. They had arrived in Trinidad about three hours earlier and went immediately to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex to liaise with local doctors and to organize the airlift.
Justice Kangaloo was seen off at Piarco by his sister, Attorney at Law, Christine Kangaloo, and her husband, Mr Kerwyn Garcia, as well as Court Protocol and Information Manager of the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr Jones P. Madeira.
Both the Judiciary and the Kangaloo family repeated their thanks to the local medical team who had been caring for Justice Kangaloo since the unfortunate accident last Sunday. These included the doctors and nurses and ancillary staff at both the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex and the Arima Health Facility and the neurosurgeon who performed emergency surgery on Sunday. They extended their thanks specially also to a nurse who came upon the accident scene moments after the crash and rendered vital first aid to Justice Kangaloo as well as to the two injured security officers, Corporal Terrence Fortune and Constable Marvin Caesar, while awaiting ambulances to take them to hospital.
Justice Kangaloo has been in a coma since the accident, and although still very critical, doctors have been noting some improvement. This was the case up to the time of his departure this morning.
Officers Fortune and Caesar continue to recuperate at home.
The Honourable the Chief Justice, Mr Justice Ivor Archie, and the Kangaloo family have welcomed the news of the signs of improvement on the part of the injured Judge of the Appeal Court, and have also asked that he be remembered specially in everyone's prayer s for a full recovery.
