ACTING CHIEF JUSTICE REMAINS IN CRITICAL CONDITION
Acting Chief Justice, Mr. Justice Wendell Kangaloo, remains in critical condition at the Eric Williams following an accident in which the Judiciary notes, with extreme regret, there were four fatalities.
The Acting Chief Justice underwent emergency surgery this morning and has since been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the institution where 24-hour monitoring facilities have been established as Doctors continue crucial post operative care and their efforts to stabilize him.
Two officers, Corporal Terrence Fortune and Constable Marvin Caesar, who were in the vehicle with the Acting Chief Justice at the time of the accident, sustained less serious injuries. Corporal Fortune was released from hospital this morning while Constable Caesar was due to be discharged later this evening.
Mr. Justice Kangaloo, the most senior Appeal Court Judge, has been acting for Chief Justice Ivor Archie during the past week. Mr. Justice Archie, who is on business travel, was being kept abreast of the situation throughout today. He returns to the country this evening.
The Judiciary wishes to express its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the medical and other personnel both at the Arima Health facility where Ms Justice Kangaloo was taken initially, and at the Eric Williams Medical Complex, for their care and attention.
The Judiciary wishes to identify with the Kangaloo family and the relatives of officers Fortune and Caesar in these distressing moments, as well as to extend its condolences to the families of the persons who died as a result of the accident.
The Judiciary seeks the prayers of all well wishers during these most difficult times for the speedy recovery of Justice Kangaloo, and for healing among those families who lost loved ones in the accident.
