Review Tribunal Expresses Thanks for Opportunity to Serve
Members of the Tribunal, which was instituted under the provisions of the recent State of Emergency to review the cases of detained persons, have expressed their appreciation to the Honourable The Chief Justice, Mr Justice Ivor Archie who appointed them, to have been given the opportunity to be of service to the national community. The Tribunal ceased to exist when the State of Emergency came to an end last night.
Chairman of the Tribunal, Mr Gilbert Peterson, SC, and member, Mr Rajmanlal Joseph, called on the Chief Justice at the Hall of Justice, Knox Street, Port of Spain, this morning, during which they reviewed activities of the body since its establishment on August 24, 2011, three days after the declaration of the State of Emergency. The third member of the Tribunal was Ms Deborah Peake, SC, with Mr Paul Isaacs serving as Secretary.
The Tribunal received three applications from persons to have their detention orders, signed by the Minister of National Security, reviewed. The last one, in the name of Dominic Pitilal of Cocorite, was filed yesterday mere hours before the expiration of the State of Emergency.
The Tribunal had commenced hearing last Friday (December 2, 2011) of applications made by Ashmeed Choate and Khalil Karamath. Further hearing of these matters had been postponed to tomorrow and December 14, 2011 respectively.
Mr Peterson noted that the Tribunal was always ready to undertake its task from the time it was appointed, and he expressed his thanks to the Judiciary for the arrangements and for the facilities which were provided to enable the body to function.
The Honourable The Chief Justice also conveyed his thanks to the members of the Tribunal and saluted their willingness to serve despite the very short notice.
